Former NBA All star Gilbert Arena recently weighed in on the age old GOAT debate between Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
During the most recent episode of his Gil’s Arena podcast, Arenas argued in favor of MJ as his No. 1 overall pick in a hypothetical all-time NBA draft.
The biggest argument on LeBron’s side is his elite longevity and all-time statistical records. Arenas argued that if Jordan knew LeBron was coming, he wouldn’t have retired twice in the middle of his NBA career.
“Out of the seven years he played, nine he played 82 games, 82 games in nine seasons, 81, and then he has an 80. We’re talking about during the years when you can clothesline. 82 games. So when you’re talking about durability, now I get him for 20 years, knowing that this kid played for 20 years. Now he’s going to take the challenge,” Arenas said, via Basketball Network.
Arenas said Jordan didn’t have a great player to model his career off of. And if he had, he wouldn’t have “f–ked around” as much.
“I would usually go with LeBron because I get everything,” Arenas added. “But when you’re talking about what made Jordan Jordan, it’s that he had no reference to follow. He was considered the best player ever by his second championship so from there; he’s just f***** around.”
Spencer Dinwiddie, a guest on the podcast, argued in favor of LeBron — citing his longevity, consistency, versatility and league-wide popularity.
“If I’m an owner, and I just stepped into this thing. I could draft one person all-time, and I know that my franchise is going to be straight for 20 years, and I’m gonna go to the Finals 16 out of the 20 years; I’m making a ton of money the whole night, I could put anybody around him, you know what I’m saying? I could put a point guard with him. I could put a center with him. I could put anybody else. Like, that’s it.”
Who would you select with the first pick in an all-time NBA draft?
