Mpho Makola spent four years with Chiefs as a teenager before later moving to Free State Stars where he became a household name.

Pirates then signed Makola from Free State Stars in 2013, and he would spend six years in Mayfair before joining Cape Town City in 2019.

But the reason Makola left Chiefs in the first place was that they didn’t promote him to the first team yet they wanted to offer him a development contract.

Had he signed it, Makola feels he would have been binded to it and that would have denied him an opportunity to play professional football.

“I knew that contract (at Chiefs) would bind me, and I’d be stuck in the development team. I wanted to play senior team football,” Makola told FARPost.

“At Ajax, I scored in a friendly game, and they wanted to sign me, but Chiefs demanded compensation. Ajax refused to pay, and I went back home and told myself I’d not go back to Chiefs.”

“I was on the verge of giving up. My mom suggested that I go back to school. But I looked at my medal cabinet. I was an amateur player, but I kept collecting medals everywhere I played,” added Makola.

Makola, 36, is currently on the books of Cape Town Cit; the team he joined at the start of the 2019-20 season following the expiry of his contract with Pirates.

He is a veteran of 340 professional games under his belt since making his PSL debut in the 2008-09 season with 31 goals to his name.
