Ex World Championship finalist Kyren Wilson was dumped out of the Snooker Shoot Out on Thursday by 14-year-old opponent Riley Powell. Wilson took on the teenage sensation in the opening round of the time-capped event.

Wilson is undoubtedly one of the best snooker players on the planet, sitting eighth in the world rankings and having reached a world championship final. This did not faze 14-year-old Powell though.

The youngster took on Wilson at the Morningside Arena in Leicester, and with the crowd onside secured one of the biggest shocks in the sport’s history.

The event sees a frame last 10 minutes, with the players placed on a shot clock which begins at 15 seconds, and is lowered to 10 in the final five minutes. The experience of Wilson showed early on as he went into a commanding 30-0 lead.

The youngster fought back though, and when returning to the table Powell ensured he took the lead heading into the final minute before Wilson conceded the match with 10 seconds left to play. Like many in the arena the youngster was left shell-shocked with his win.

Per Eurosport, 14-year-old Powell commented: “First thing I went out there to do is just enjoy it. To come out with a win, I’ve got no words!” The youngster’s performance has no doubt caught the eye of many in the snooker world.

And he received plaudits from one of the sport’s greatest ever players, with snooker stalwart Jimmy White singing the praises of the teenage sensation. After watching Powell in full-flow during his win, White felt the youngster was more than worthy of the victory.

He said: “Fantastic stuff. I like the way he plays, he’s a modern-day player who goes for his long shots and two or three of them were quite difficult pots. He was quite clear headed out there, he ran the clock down, and he deserved to win.”

Powell is not the only 14-year-old to secure a remarkable victory at the Shoot Out though. Vladislav Gradinari also defeated 32-year-old Ng On Yee in his opening round match in Leicester.
