‘Excited’ Watt aiming for Championship title at Dundee United

Dundee United vice-captain Tony Watt has revealed it was never his intention to leave the club on-loan last January and says he was left upset with it happened.

But the 29-year-old former Celtic and Motherwell forward is now delighted to be back in the fold and is excited to work with manager Jim Goodwin and is aiming for the Championship league title to get the club back into the top-flight at first time of asking.

The Tannadice club were relegated last season as Watt was in Paisley helping St Mirren to a top-six finish but he insists he would have stayed put had it been his decision.

He said: “I’m glad to be back, it was never my plan to leave in January, if you had asked me in September or October I would never have had an idea of leaving.

“But I had to leave, that’s life, but I’m glad to get the chance to come back and start again. I’ve had good conversations with the manager and the people upstairs as well and I’m delighted to be here.

“We want to win as many games as possible and go on and win the league now. That’s our aim, to win the league and get promoted and get Dundee United back where it’s supposed to be.”

On being the named the club’s new vice-captain with is happy that Goodwin is showing faith in him and is excited about what the next two years will hold.

“I’ve had a good few chats with the manager and he if he wasn’t here it would’ve been difficult for me coming back, because obviously I was a bit upset about how last season panned out.

“But the manager was honest and you can tell an honest person as soon as you speak to them and that’s what I needed.

“He believes in me and I believe in him and that’s the main thing, and I’m really excited about the season.

“I have two years left on my contract here and we are aiming to win the league this year and then get as high up the Premiership as possible the season after that.
