Award-winning filmmaker Ridley Scott is known for countless big-screen masterpieces, including Alien and Gladiator, which now has a sequel works. It was just announced that Oscar-nominee Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin) is joining the cast of Gladiator 2 alongside Paul Mescal (Aftersun). A more recent, completed project of Scott’s is All the Money in the World, starring Michelle Williams as the mom in distress and Charlie Plummer as the kidnapped grandson of John Paul Getty (played by the late, great Christopher Plummer, no relation to Charlie).
In our recent interview with Charlie Plummer, he opened up about working with Ridley Scott on All the Money in the World:
“He’s the best. And I’ve gotten to work with really incredible people, I’m really, really fortunate. He’s just a part of history in a way, and working with him feels like that. It’s maybe the only time I’ve gotten to work with someone in that capacity where, throughout the process, I just kind of felt like I needed to be taking note of every ounce of the experience, because it’s just that useful. And his experiences in the industry and as a storyteller are just so useful, and I know that I will be reflecting on those moments for the rest of my life.”
Working with Ridley Scott
Plummer acknowledged the buzz surrounding All the Money in the World back in 2017, as Kevin Spacey was set to play Getty until news broke of allegations against the Oscar-winning actor. His scenes were then re-shot with Christopher Plummer, who ultimately received an Oscar nod for his work.
“It’s a crazy movie, and it was a crazy release and everything around it, you know?” said Charlie Plummer. “But I’m so grateful to have gotten that experience. And it’s funny […] I’m going to be living back in Rome [where they shot All the Money in the World]. And I’m definitely going to be pulling from Ridley and his guidance at all times. I think that just the way he lives and the way that he works, and how he gives to the stories that he tells is the greatest lesson that I was able to take away from that.”
Ridley Scott is also working on the film Kitbag with Joaquin Phoenix, which Charlie Plummer wishes he could have joined. “I can’t wait to see what he’s got cooking with this Napoleon movie,” he said. “I tried to get just, like, a scene in that. But they said, ‘We don’t have anything like that available.'” It’s certainly their loss.
Plummer Talks Wildflower and The Return
But for now, Plummer has a starring role in the new film Wildflower, which hits theaters Friday. Based on a true story, the coming-of-age film follows Bea Johnson (Kiernan Shipka) from birth to graduation as she navigates life with two intellectually disabled parents and an extended family who can’t quite agree on the best way to help. Plummer, who plays Bea’s boyfriend, opened up about why he wanted to join the project from the get-go:
“I think I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t the people involved because, before I even read the script, I just saw the group of people that, at that time, were involved, which wasn’t even the full extent. And I was really excited about it. Once I read the script, it really felt like something I would actually enjoy and my family might actually enjoy, my grandparents, and aunts, and uncles, and cousins.”
Plummer also dished on other recent projects of his, including one that’s shooting overseas this summer in Europe: “It’s an adaptation of a portion of The Odyssey [titled The Return]. This really talented writer-director, Uberto Pasolini, wrote the script and is going to direct it. And Ralph Fiennes is playing Odysseus, and he’s returning home from his voyage to his wife Penelope, who Juliette Binoche is going to play, and their son, who I’m going to play. And so it’s really about that kind of family dynamic in a lot of ways.”
Plummer was also in a film that premiered at this year’s South by Southwest festival, called National Anthem. “I’m really excited for people to get to see it,” he said. “It’s definitely something different from what I’ve gotten to do before, with really great people.”
