From directing a musical to facing the repercussions of the pandemic, the journey for this film has been an experience for Jagat and Sagar who have stood with each other and supported each other during challenging times. Giving all the credit to Sagar for completing the film successfully, Jagat spoke about the immense faith shown by Shrivastava who believed in him and the film.
EXCLUSIVE: Jagat Singh Solanki speaks about Sagar Shrivastava being the ‘driving force’ for his debut film Krispy Rishtey; reminisces about the song sung by KK
Describing him as the ‘driving force behind the film’, Jagat Singh Solanki spoke about the dedication, hard work and time put in by his producer. “Sagar is the producer of the film and coming from a non-filmy background, he joined me in this boat together. We started this project with the faith and belief that we will take it to the end. In the beginning as anyone would have, we too were not very clear about the tough and rough roads ahead, where we have to walk on, the kind of hurdles which will come in front of us etc. But one thing me and Sagar both have in common was that we will never give up, no matter what happens. We will fight till the end product goes out in the market and it reaches to the right audience and trust me, we will go to any extent to do so. And Sagar is such a headstrong guy. He has never let me down and he never let me give up also. He was the driving force. Though he was handling, of course, the finance and the administration part, but he was also handling me. There were so many responsibilities on me – I was looking after the creative part, writing the film, screenplay story, dialogues, it’s my directorial debut and I even acted in the film as one of the lead actor. But because of Sagar standing by me, he didn’t let me fall off. Maybe I would have definitely fallen somewhere if he would not have been there.”
In our previous interview with Jagat Singh, the director-actor confessed that Krispy Rishtey started off as a 30 minute short film that went on to become a 17 song musical. Despite the way it extended, the actor maintained that Sagar never wavered from his promise and in fact, he was quite encouraging and excited about the way the project was panning out. “When I told him we have added one more song and then got two more songs, he was always happy and gave me a go ahead. Songs kept adding as per the screenplay demanded but he was always excited and full of energy. He kept pushing me and had that confidence in me. We started looking for the musicians and making arrangements for whatever was required. Thankfully by the time we were ready to record, we have great songs with amazing lyrical power and some great music done by 6 different very talented music directors and to top it all, the BGM is done superbly, which beats with every breath the film takes as the screen play moves ahead. So finally 17 refreshing songs mixing flawlessly with the storyline and then the singers and everything started falling in place, once we started.”
“Generally Producers, co-producers, financiers first ask questions like how will you sell the film, how will they get the money back etc. But Sagar has this confidence in me and the project. To both of us, It was clearly understood that it will be not be easy to get stars in our first movie but; we had immense faith in the content we were making that even if we don’t get one, we still will create the gravity with good actors, correct execution and the magic of great music and background music doing it for us,” he added.
Initially Jagat and Sagar started off with the idea of releasing the film in theatres, but when COVID hit, they reworked their strategy. Interestingly, they found high potential in OTT for their musical. Speaking about it, he said, “Post COVID and the fluctuating numbers of cases, people are still refraining from coming to the theatres. Like in the first wave, we thought it would all pass, then the second wave came and then the third and by that time, we made up our mind that we don’t mind going in for an OTT, once the film is ready.”
By now, we know that the film has some melodious tracks sung by some popular singers like Mohit Chauhan, Jubin Nautiyal, Papon, Shreya Goshal , Richa Sharma, Altamush Faridi, Sabri brothers, Nakkash Aziz, Vikrant and Neha Karode among others. Yet another number in this film is sung by KK. “I had this song written and composed especially for KK. When KK said yes to the song, it was perhaps one of the happiest moments of my life. When I met him at the studio, he was listening the scratch of the song. He heard it and then started singing. And guess what? We had imagined that the song will go to a certain level, but where KK took it, it was beyond our imagination because it had ‘the KK magic’. We were all blown off by that magic, Me, the composer-Vijay Verma, the arranger-Anamik Chauhan, the mix master guy-Rupjit and the lyricist-Rajesh Manthan at studio all got pulled into that gravity. See, I am a spiritual person and believe me, I actually felt the presence of God there in the studio when he sang “khwaab jeete”. That’s the power and dynamism of the legendary singer KK. The kind of preparation which has been put in, the choreography I had in my head, I was crystal clear that which shot will come on which beats. When I requested him to re-sing the last line by stretching it a bit again, as per the visuals in my mind, he gladly obliged. He made me feel so comfortable, showed so much of faith and belief in me. I promised him that he will be proud to see the song in the film. And then…he just went away. And now, he is not there to see the movie, to tell me how he liked the song. All I am left with those precious behind the scene videos capturing those moments. Perhaps we would surely release them all, someday. As for the film, I am sure he will bless us from wherever he is.”
Talking further about the film, Jagat also elaborated on the unique titling Krispy Rishtey. “Krispy Rishtey is all about the different flavors of relationships – like the sweetness of love, the sourness of a break up, the bitterness of a separation and the temptations of the reunions. Our film explores the relationship of a husband and a wife, and then there is a parallel track of a complicated relationship between the husband and his girlfriend. Adding to the twist in the tale comes out another one which turns around the whole story upside down. So, with each flavor, we convey a different side of a relationship,” he concluded.
While the post production is now complete, production house Wooing Whistles is currently exploring exciting options on OTT for Krispy Rishtey. Elaborating on the release date, Jagat added, “There are three to four big players in the market who everybody wants to go to. The release date will be decided, once we close the deal with one of them. And once it is taken over, the process of publicity etc. will kick start from there on. At the end of the day, what me and Sagar are doing is always in the interest of the film. It has to be a mutual understanding between our production house and the person or the platform we choose to release it.”
