Malaika Arora is one of the most successful women in the industry. The diva has often said that she is living her best life at 46 and she could not be a more proud 46-year-old woman. But Malaika Arora has often been at the receiving end of ugly trolling, ageism and sexism too because she is a woman in her 40s dressing, living a certain way and is in a relationship with a younger man. We sat down for a heartfelt chant with Malaika for Her Story Season 2 on Bollywood Bubble, where the actress revealed that she has been facing ageism, sexism ‘on daily basis’ but has learnt to brush it off her shoulder.
When we asked Malaika about age shaming and sexism being more subjected to women, she said, “It only happens with women. You don’t see any of it happen with men. You never ever see ageism, sexism, it’s more always towards a woman. A woman getting divorced is always like ‘Oh My God, How can she?’, a woman having a relationship, ‘Oh, how can she?’, a woman at a certain age working and dressing up a certain way, ‘Oh, How can she’. It’s just a bit bizarre why is it only relegated to a woman and not men.”
Malaika, who is dating 36-year-old actor Arjun Kapoor, said that the mindset of the society needs to change as it is high time, “That needs to change, I deal with it on a daily basis. Earlier it used to kind of bother me, but now it doesn’t. I just take it in my stride, like I said I am a very proud 46-year-old woman. World-over look at the women, sone of the most successful women world over are all 45 and above and ruling the world, wearing it on their sleeve, kids, family, work, success stories, careers, I don’t understand why are we here.”
When we asked Malaika if it is the kind of conditioning in society right now, she said, “At the end of the day it is a conditioning, women as kids are told ‘women are only meant to produce babies, take care of your homes, take care of your husband, bring up the kids, anything else is not perceived as right.’ So hopefully with time, I am hoping these mindsets change.”
