Over the years, actress and producer Mary Kate Wiles has been a part of several projects for both film and television. Some of her past projects include The Lydia Bennet!!, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Kissing in the Rain, and Edgar Allan Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party. Earlier this year, Wiles appeared as the infamous Vicky in the live-action Paramount+ series, Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder. Now airing on the official Shipwrecked Comedy YouTube channel is her latest series titled, Headless: A Sleepy Hollow Story.
Taking on the Role as Vicky in Fairly Odder
“We had such a blast. Making that show and I love it. I’m so proud of it. I genuinely think it’s so funny. I got the audition. It was just a normal audition that came from my agent, and I had auditioned. The casting directors do a lot of Nickelodeon shows like Danger Force, which a lot of the creative teams also work on, and I had auditioned for Danger Force a few times and never gotten it, but so the casting directors that knew me just from seeing me audition for that show multiple times. And yeah, so I got the audition, and I didn’t grow up watching Fairly OddParents, I was a strictly PBS-only kid. There was no Nickelodeon for me.”
“So, I didn’t really realize until I Googled Fairly OddParents Vicky, and I was like, oh, she’s a big deal. There was something about it that made me feel like this is right for me at the time. I was like, I feel like I might get this, and it was really fun. They had me do some scenes from episode four, which is Vicky’s best friend and her first big episode, where she’s both mean and really sweet because she gets a chance to be the kids’ best friend. So, in the audition, I had to show a lot of those different colors. And, gosh, I think I turned in my audition tape on like Monday. I heard I booked it on Wednesday, and then I started working the following Thursday.”
She continues: “I didn’t know at the time because everybody else that you talked to from the show or series regulars have a contract to be in all the episodes. I didn’t know at the time how many episodes I was going to be in. It was very up in the air, but I was like, well, I think she’s a pretty big character. So, I feel like I’ll be coming back. Sure enough, I did come back quite a bit. And by the end of the show, they were just like, so sweet. To write me some really fun stuff to do, including singing and dancing and fighting, and it was a blast. Such a blast.”
On Her Biggest Challenges During Production
“I was terrified because here I am getting cast as this character that clearly a lot of people are familiar with and means a lot to a lot of people. I knew her once I got the part, and you know even for my audition, I was watching clips and watching episodes of the original cartoon as much as I could. But like I said, I didn’t have months and months to prepare. I had a week. So, there’s a certain point at which I just kind of had to be like, okay, well I’m going to do what I can to honor the original. But ultimately, I’m just going to do what I feel is the best interpretation of what the writers are writing for this show. And for the best hope that I’m able to capture some of her spirit, and I think part of it too.”
“As you know, Fairly Odder takes place nine years after the cartoon takes place, and so Vicky is older, she was a babysitter, she was a teen in the cartoon. Now she’s in her 20s so things about her are different, like her hairstyle. I have found it funny. There’s a lot of people that were like Vicky doesn’t wear a bun. I was like, do you wear the same hairstyle for your entire life? Like give her a break. She could do something else with her hair. So, trying to play a version of her that feels like the same person but older and slightly different, and maybe wanting different things.”
On Headless & Shipwrecked Comedy
“Headless is a project I’m doing with Shipwrecked Comedy that I mentioned earlier, the group that I produce with. I’m not a writer, but my fiancé and his sister are our writing team. We all act in everything, and I also produce. Headless: A Sleepy Hollow Story is a modern not exactly an adaptation, but a modern story. It’s heavily inspired by The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Where Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman become roommates, and they are trying to find the person’s head.”
“We raised $200,000 for it last year on Kickstarter. It’s not our first series, but it’s going to be our biggest series, and it’s going to be 10 episodes. The episodes are releasing on our Shipwrecked Comedy YouTube channel, and we’ve got some incredible cast members in it like Matthew Mercer from Critical Role, Jimmy Wong, Jon Rubinstein, Parvesh Cheena, Joanna Sotomura, and the list goes on and on. So, it’s without a doubt the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But we’re all incredibly proud of it and excited about it. I hope people will enjoy it.”
