In September, Macmillan will release Doña Quixote: Rise of the Knight. The middle-grade graphic novel from the publisher’s Henry Holt and Co. imprint comes from the creative team of writer Rey Terciero and artist Monica M. Magaña. The book follows a young girl who uncovers a supernatural threat in her small Texas town. Today The Beat is pleased to offer an exclusive excerpt of the graphic novel.

Here’s how Macmillan describes Doña Quixote: Rise of the Knight:

Lucia Castillo dreams of being a hero like her grandfather. But to the people in their Texas town, he was just a strange old man who dressed up as a knight and claimed to save the world from monsters only he could see.

Now years later, when Lucia and her best friend—and trusty squire—Sandro discover the town mayor is secretly a shapeshifting beast of Mexican lore, her parents think she’s imagining things like her “Abuelo Loco.” Only Lucia, wearing her grandfather’s magical helmet, can see the hidden threat. Can she and Sandro prove others wrong and stop the mayor from unleashing evil on their town—and beyond?

Doña Quixote: Rise of the Knight is the latest graphic novel from Rey Terciero, a pen name for writer Rex Ogle. Other books written by Ogle under the Terciero name include Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy (with artist Bre Indigo) and Swan Lake: Quest for the Kingdoms (with artist Megan Kearney). It’s the debut graphic novel for Monica M. Magaña, a storyboard artist and animator who has worked on properties including Star Wars and Polly Pocket.

Check out the exclusive excerpt from Doña Quixote: Rise of the Knight below. The 240-page graphic novel will be available in hardcover and softcover formats, and as an eBook, on Tuesday, September 5th.
