Exclusive: Snag Director and Lead Actress on Their Modern-Day Fairy Tale

0

Fairy tales are typically about a prince traveling across some sort of fictional universe to rescue his beloved princess — or something to that effect. Now, what if said story were laced with gangs and violence? After all, some of these beloved tales have been adapted to the big screen for horror films, mind you. And now comes a unique new fairytale of a film called Snag, which is out this week in select theaters and is available to purchase on Digital.

Snag centers on an Australian lone wolf’s quiet existence, which is quickly shattered when he learns that the woman he once loved and thought was dead is alive and held captive by ruthless gangsters. Now, to take on this dangerous criminal organization, he must seek out allies and storm into a world of violence to rescue the love of his life.

We recently caught up with the two leads of Snag, Sofia Castro and Ben Milliken (who also co-wrote and directed the film). They dished on the creative process behind their new movie and other projects in the works. Read our exclusive interview below.

Snag Is a Modern-Day Fairy Tale

MW: Sofia, how did it all start for you in terms of joining Snag?

Sofia Castro: It started like 10 days before Christmas, and it was the longest audition I ever had made in my entire life, because it was like an eight-scene audition. And then the callback was after New Year’s Eve. And when I did the callback, four hours later they call me, and they told me that I got the role for Valentina. I screamed, I cried. I couldn’t believe that I was doing this movie. And after that, I started prepping everything for the role, and it’s been great. It’s a dream come true. And I’m so grateful with Ben for giving me this opportunity.

MW: Ben, as co-writer in addition to directing and starring in Snag, how did you come up with such a cool idea for a movie?

Ben Milliken: It was actually in a conversation in 2017, on my front porch in the middle of winter. It was someone who was very special to me, we were having a chat, and he was like, “You should make a movie about a boy that loves a girl.” And essentially, that’s what it ended up being. It really was birthed from just one of those regular everyday conversations that kind of planted in my head and stuck there. And I couldn’t get it out. And then now, we’re here. And it’s very surreal.

MW: When I first read about Snag, I saw that it was described as like a modern-day fairy tale.

Ben Milliken: Ultimately, it was the goal to kind of tell this love story in a way that was a fairy tale, because you see that there’s no technology in the movie […] It’s got this kind of dreamlike quality to it, where I wanted it to kind of exist in its own little bubble. It’s like a world within a world. It’s a movie that can only exist in this particular reality.

MW: Was it tricky at times, being the director and then shooting the scenes that you’re acting in?

Ben Milliken: It was actually strangely freeing, to tell you the truth, because it took all the self-consciousness and all the nervousness and all of that sort of stuff out of the acting process […] I think everybody gets that vulnerability and self-consciousness and stuff, and it kind of took all of that out.

Ben Milliken: I was able to see that the most important thing was the movie. So I could look at myself completely, objectively, and not judge myself, but be able to say, “No, this is right,” “this is wrong,” “we need to tweak here and tweak there.” And also, I had people around me that I’ve trusted and that were way smarter than me, and way better at everything they do than I was. So that was really key.

MW: Sofia, you have some pretty intense scenes, but then you have some fun moments as well. What was the most challenging moment for you while shooting this movie? Does a particular scene come to mind?

Sofia Castro: I’m not the best driver. So the scene where we are in the car, I almost killed Ben […] I remember that day, I said, “I have to talk to you, I’m not the best driver.” He was really having a car [driving for the scene] and the camera on the front, and Ben on the side. And I had to be, like, so playful and loving, and then be angry and drive really fast. And Ben was like, “Faster, faster!” And I’m like, “No, I don’t want to go faster!”

MW: Are there other projects you guys are working on, that you’d like to share about?

Sofia Castro: I’m doing a soap opera right now in Mexico, and it’s going to be out in June. So yeah, that’s what I’m working right now.

Ben Milliken: I have a couple of things in the works, a couple of things that, since the wrapping up of this film, I’ve been back in the room writing. So a couple of things that I’m hoping to get off the ground.

MW: What was it like shooting with pro wrestler CJ Perry?

Ben Milliken: She’s amazing. She’s such a bada** as well. She’s so cool, and being able to be there during some of her fight scenes and some of her action scenes, I mean, it was so fun. It was really, really fun.
