Eduardo Sánchez, co-creator of The Blair Witch Project, is returning to the horror genre for his next project, as executive producer of The Jester, an Epic Pictures Dread Original film coming to theaters later this month, with a VOD release in October. The film is directed by Colin Krawchuk, who is bringing The Jester character to the big screen after first featuring him in a series of YouTube short films. According to the official synopsis from Epic Pictures, the film follows two estranged sisters who are mourning the death of their father, only to discover someone is stalking them and also tormenting the inhabitants of their small town on Halloween night. They soon realize it isn’t just a person in a mask, but an evil entity that must be stopped. The two sisters realize their only chance to survive and defeat The Jester is to right the wrongs in their dark past.

Krawchuk wrote and directed the film from a story he co-wrote with Michael Sheffield. Sánchez, Patrick Ewald and Mary Beth McAndrews serve as executive producers. The film opens in limited release on September 29, 2023, with a VOD release on October 3, 2023, just in time for the Halloween season.

Just like Art the Clown, who caused a stir in the Terrifier movies many years after his original appearance in a short movie, Colin Krawchuk first introduced The Jester in October of 2016, in the first of three short films posted to his YouTube Channel, MakeDo Entertainment. The popularity led to Epic Pictures and Krawchuck developing them into a feature film.

“When Brian Clarke (developer of The Mortuary Assistant game) introduced me to Colin’s insanely popular YouTube shorts of The Jester (over 30 million views), I was immediately captivated and knew we had to make a feature film out of them,” Epic Picture Group CEO Patrick Ewald said. “It is incredible to see how Colin has taken his original concept and evolved it into a truly terrifying feature film. I can’t wait for audiences to experience this new face of evil in the supernatural entity known as The Jester.”

“It’s been so exciting to see the little short film we made back in 2016 eventually get us to the big screen,” director Colin Krawchuk said. ‘“Turning the essence of a short into a feature was an unexpected challenge, and one that could not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of a passionate crew. I’m excited for audiences to see our talented actors bring these new characters to life alongside a reimagined Jester.”

Here’s the film’s trailer.

Epic Pictures acquired the horror website Dread Central in 2017, and now produces and distributes unique, independent horror films theatrically under the Dread label, and follows that with a release on its video-on-demand channel, DreadTV. Dread is the label behind the cult hits Satanic Hispanics and Terrifier.
