Exclusive: The Ladies of Sheroes Talk Kicking Butt on the Big Screen

“We can be heroes,” sang David Bowie, “just for one day.” Now, a new action thriller from writer-director Jordan Gertner suggests that four friends with particular skill sets could be, if just for one day…Sheroes. It’s a fun title that matches the equally entertaining vibe in this Thailand-set popcorn flick starring Isabelle Fuhrman, Sasha Luss, Wallis Day, and Skai Jackson.

Sheroes has a simple premise: The group of four ventures overseas for a weekend of fun, which quickly goes awry after a luggage mix-up. Pretty soon, drug lords are after them… and one of them gets kidnapped! From there, it’s all swanky nightclubs, explosions, and an epic phone call that would make Taken star Liam Neeson proud…

We recently caught up with Luss, Day, and Jackson in a group interview that found themselves agreeing on a lot of points, including their favorite moments on set and the overall “friends forever” vibe both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

“Being with These Awesome Ladies”

With a thrill ride like Sheroes, it must be hard to pinpoint which scene was the most fun to shoot. For its lead actresses, this was the reality. “That was just my favorite thing, just being with these beautiful women on set and getting to have this amazing time together. We got to film in Thailand!” exclaimed Jackson. “Everyone was such a joy to work with. So I would say those are my favorite memories, just being with them.”

“Just being with this awesome ladies was so much fun on- and off-camera,” echoed Luss. “And there was one moment where [my character] Diamond’s house, it’s a gorgeous house on the beachfront, so we talked to our director, and we’re like, ‘We want to have a girls’ sleepover and talk about what Diamond, Ezra, and Daisy would do together.’ They would eat sushi, gossip, watch a movie. And it was like one of the best nights.”

And it certainly helps when the cast and crew genuinely enjoy each other’s company. After speaking with the writer-director and then the cast, that certainly seems to be the case with Sheroes. “Both on and off camera, we just were glued,” added Day. “We just really, really got along, and it just enhanced the entire experience. And that camaraderie ran throughout the whole cast and the entire crew as well.”

As previously mentioned, there’s no denying that Sheroes is a catchy title. And since this first film sets up such an exciting universe of female action stars kicking butt, one can only wonder about a potential sequel. “I think we shouldn’t speak on behalf of everybody, but we would absolutely love to do a Sheroes 2,” said Day. She continued:

We love the characters and storyline and every part of it. I think all these characters have more and more story in them. I just think it could be maybe somewhere else just as cool as Thailand, maybe Bali? Or I think Cape Town would be a cool setting.

“Special Skills” and Future Projects

Early in the movie — the moment when “sh*t just got real,” to paraphrase Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys II — Ezra (Fuhrman) connects with her friend’s kidnappers over the phone and can’t help but recite Taken star Liam Neeson’s epic line about a “particular set of skills.” Therefore, we couldn’t help but ask the other three stars about their own training in order to be properly equipped for such an intense film.

“Well, the skill that I had to learn was to drive a boat,” said Luss. “Obviously, we realized that I don’t know how to drive a boat the day before I had to do it. So they were like, ‘OK, we’re just going to be cool, it’s going to be cool.’ And I’m like, ‘Sure, we’re gonna be cool.’ And it was one of the most beautiful moments in my life, because I was with my girls on a boat, driving into a sunset with a bunch of people screaming on the next boat. They were freaking out because I was going too fast. But that is something really cool, and I actually used [the skill] recently. I was like, ‘I know how to do it!’ Being an actor, you learn all these cool things.”

Looking ahead, the ladies of Sheroes remain ever busy with other Hollywood projects in the works. “My next big thing to come out is based on the Marvel character Red Sonja, where I play the villain,” said Day.

“I have a post-Cold War drama that’s coming out soon, which was a very, very different experience,” added Luss.

And in addition to her acting, Skai Jackson has written a book that shares insightful lessons she’s learned along the way in her career. So we had to ask: Which does she like better, writing or acting? “I just like doing everything,” said Jackson. “I love having my hands in different pots and trying everything that’s most important. So it’s not one thing that I love the most rather than the other. But I’ll also always say ‘acting’ because that was my first passion.”

From Paramount Global Content Distribution, Sheroes will be in select theaters and on digital beginning June 23.
