The popular Malayalam star Tovino Thomas, who made way into the hearts of Indian audience as a fun superhero in Minnal Murali is all set to return. The action-comedy released on Netflix but did not have a theatrical release due to restrictions. The superhero film, which established Tovino as a Pan India star, has now become a franchise with a sequel in the making. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Tovino discussed the plans for Minnal Murali 2.
EXCLUSIVE: Tovino Thomas confirms Minal Murrali 2 release ONLY in theatres; says, “I want Netflix to acquire its OTT rights”
“We will release Minnal Murali 2 only in theaters. After it releases in the theaters, I want Netflix to acquire its OTT rights,” Tovino Thomas told Bollywood Hungama. In the interview, he also recalled how it was challenging for them to promote the superhero comedy due to the COVID guidelines and restrictions. The actor asserted that for the prequel OTT release was the best option for them at that point of time but it would be very different for the upcoming sequel.
“Netflix has played a very big part in Minnal Murali’s promotions. At that point of time, that was the best option we had – to release it in OTT; because we had 50 percent occupancy in theatres and so many restrictions. And the kind of promotions Netflix did that was necessary. And for Malayalam industry, it’s not very easy to do such promotions. It will cost moderately big budget movies’ budget to promote a movie like that. So whatever Netflix did was definitely an add on to the content we made. So we are very thankful to Netflix and very thankful to people who worked for that movie,” he continued.
“Having said that, when the second part (Minnal Murali 2) releases, I want it to be released in theaters only,” asserted Tovino.
For the unversed, Minnal Murali was directed by Basil Joseph and it featured Femina George as the leading lady and Guru Somasundaram as the antagonist. Tovino Thomas also won the Best Actor award at SIIMA 2022 for his performance in the popular film.
