Expedia App Integrates ChatGPT

The Expedia app is one of the most-used travel apps for booking and researching travel destinations. This online travel agency (OTA) recently announced that it’s adding ChatGPT features to its mobile app to provide an interactive experience. Here is how the generative AI platform is improving Expedia’s travel planning tools.

How The Expedia ChatGPT Travel Planner Works

Travelers can immediately start using the ChatGPT-powered travel planner in the Expedia mobile app for iOS devices. Additionally, an Android chatbot will launch soon. Existing customers with a compatible phone or tablet will automatically see a button when opening the app.

Upon opening the app, users will see a box with the following text: “Planning a new escape? Let’s chat. Explore trip ideas with ChatGPT.”

This AI integration is still in the early days, and it cannot plan an entire trip (yet) as Expedia doesn’t want to provide false details or low-quality information. While the latest generation of artificial intelligence chatbots is impressive, it’s not error-free, so safeguards are in place.

At the moment, you can explore things to do at a destination or ask travel planning questions, such as the average weather in April or some of the best kid-friendly activities. You can also get hotel recommendations. The app saves your conversations to refer back to if it takes several days to research your trip.

However, you won’t be able to compare flight options or book vacation packages.

The full-service capabilities should be arriving shortly as the Expedia ChatGPT plugin is also in “beta” mode and available to select users. This plugin has more features and acts like a virtual travel agent that can recommend flights and hotels, which you must still manually search for on the Expedia app.
