NAGPUR: The Vidarbha think-tank has gone back to the basics as they approach the most challenging domestic tournament — the Ranji Trophy. After having Akshay Wadkar as skipper in T20 and one-dayers, they continued with their most successful player — Faiz Fazal — as the skipper in the 4-day format.
Wadkar will be his deputy. Vidarbha will face Railways in the Ranji Trophy opener at Nagpur from Tuesday.
There are two major changes with Jitesh Sharma and Akshay Karnewar kept out. Promising Harsh Dubey has replaced Karnewar. Karnewar is a stand-by. Dubey will combine with senior-pros Aditya Sarwate and Akshay Wakhare in the spin department.
It is surprising to see middle-order bat Yash Rathod being omitted. He had scored 900+ runs in back-to-back Cooch Behar seasons, played India under-19, was consistent in under-23/25, and graduated to the senior side by doing well in the Vijay Hazare last year.
Rest team members were in the scheme of things between 2017 and 2019 when Vidarbha won 2 Ranji titles.
This is the first time in the last decade that there have been no camps, no activities for probables, and no training schedule for key players in the lead up to selection. With no VCA practice in picture, players were expected to play in Guzder League match which started on Thursday, just 4-5 days before the Ranji game.
