A screenshot of a tweet by BBC Breaking News is doing rounds on social media platforms. The tweet has an image of Shaista Parveen, the wife of Atiq Ahmed who was killed recently in Prayagraj. The caption of the tweets talks about rumors of extra-marital affair of Shaista Parveen with Atiq Ahmed’s co-accused in Umesh Pal Murder Case, Guddu Muslim. It also alleges that this affair led to the murder of Atiq Ahmed. You can see a Facebook post sharing the viral screenshot below.

The tweet reads as follows, “There is a rumour in Prayagraj that Shaista Parveen, the wife of killed mafia turn politician Atique Ahmed may b behind the murder of Atique & Ashraf. Shaista had illegal affair with Guddu Muslim & both did mukhbiri for a UP West based mafia who arranged for these murders

The obvious grammatical mistakes makes one suspicious about the tweet. Especially when the tweet is from a reputed media organization like the BBC, such mistakes and not expected. Let us find out whether BBC Breaking News actually tweeted this grammatically inaccurate and sensational tweet or not.

As mentioned earlier, one cannot ignore the glaringly obvious spelling and grammar mistakes. Instead of ‘maybe’, the tweet says ‘may b’ and the spelling of the word ‘illegal’ is also typed incorrectly. 

We also checked BBC Breaking News’s Twitter handle. BBC Breaking News Twitter handle tweets about major international news events. We checked all the tweets done by BBC Breaking News on 18 April 2023 and did not find any tweet on Atiq Ahmed or his murder case. Conclusion

The BBC tweet reporting rumours of illegal affair between Atiq Ahmed’s wife Shaista Parveen and Guddu Muslim is fake. The investigation shows that BBC Breaking News had not tweeted any such news on 18 April.
