Before the 2023 NBA Draft on Thursday, NBA insider Shams Charania reported that there was growing “momentum” for the Charlotte Hornets selecting Scoot Henderson with their No. 2 overall pick.

In addition to The Athletic and Stadium, Charania is employed by FanDuel.

So when the Hornets ultimately selected Brandon Miller with their No. 2 pick, controversy began to swirl around the sports betting world.

“It’s kind of insane that Shams gets paid by Fanduel to do promo for them in between tweeting out stuff like this that doesn’t actually say much but helps shift the odds and get more bets placed,” one betting account wrote.

“I’m sure I’m just over-reading the situation, but it is a bit uncomfy that Shams is in bed with FanDuel and completely moved the market on the No. 2 pick just for it to still be Miller Just me?” another added.

FanDuel responded to accusations against Shams and the company on Friday.

“FanDuel is not privy to any news that Shams breaks on his platforms,” the sportsbook said in a statement, via Darren Rovell.

Miller had been favored as the Hornets No. 2 pick for weeks, but Charania’s report shifted the odds in Henderson’s favor on FanDuel and other sportsbooks.

Henderson ultimately went No. 3 overall to the Portland Trail Blazers.
