Marcus Smart’s involvement in the blockbuster three-team trade in the NBA on Wednesday night came as a surprise to many fans.
Smart was considered one of the most vital players on the Celtics roster, a leader and defensive stalwart who set the tone for the rest of the team.
Boston is set to go in a different direction with its roster, brining in seven-footer Kristaps Porzingis. An initial deal saw the Celtics moving Malcolm Brogdon instead of Smart, but it fell through shortly before the actual trade was announced.
Smart was reportedly upset by the news of the trade, according to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe.

Many fans felt bad for Smart, and thought that he would be a Celtic for his entire career.

The Celtics moved Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of the deal. Smart will be moving from one potential contender to another, but it’s clear that many members of the Celtics’ fanbase loved him and he loved being in the city of Boston.
