It’s hard to deny that Russell Westbrook isn’t playing at the same level that he once did. But even amid a pretty clear decline he is reportedly signing a deal that many are stunned by.
According to Westbrook’s agent Jeff Schwartz via ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Westbrook has agreed to a two-year deal to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers that’s worth $8 million. The deal also includes a player option.
“Free agent Russell Westbrook has agreed on a two-year, nearly $8M deal to stay with the Clippers, agent Jeff Schwartz of @Excelbasketball tells ESPN. Deal includes player option. Clippers were eager to bring back 9-time All-Star after his late season run as starting point guard,” Wojnarowski wrote.
For fans though, a deal of that comparatively small size is stunning. Clippers fans love that they’re getting the nine-time All-Star for what amounts to a bargain, while others wonder if Wojnarowski may have made a typo because it’s so small:

“Dillon Brooks out here getting 20 million a year while Russ gets 4 mill?” one user mused.
“Future HOF taking a pay cut to WIN…. A lot of Role Players making 2x-3x as much, a lot of respect for Russ’s Competitiveness,” wrote another.
“Lot of players that got paid $20M-$40M this free agency haven’t had a playoff series like Russ just had against the Suns,” a third pointed out.
Will Russell Westbrook taking a paycut precede the Clippers winning a title?
