Vincent Kompany was branded a ‘class act’ for apologising to Blackburn fans over Josh Brownhill’s taunting on Tuesday night.
The Clarets sealed the Championship title at Ewood Park – home of their bitter rivals – courtesy of Manuel Benson’s second-half stunner.
There were ugly scenes in the aftermath of the derby clash following the full-time whistle as a scuffle broke out between both sets of players.
It led Kompany to jump in to haul midfielder Jack Cork away, and he was forced to intervene shortly later to stop Brownhill from mocking the Rovers faithful.
Celebrating his side clinching the title, the ex-Bristol City star held aloft an inflatable trophy, where he repeatedly lifted it up towards the home end – much to the delight of the travelling supporters.
As the Rovers fans hurled a torrent of abuse towards Brownhill, Kompany stepped in to pull away the 27-year-old, before holding holding up his hand to say sorry.
Fans instantly took to social media to praise the Manchester City legend, with one user tweeting: “Kompany apologising to Blackburn fans is rather nice.”
Another said: “Thats how class VK is, Brownhill taunting the rovers fans and him pulling him away and holds hand up in apology. The man is just class.”
A third added: “VK apologising to Rovers fans for Brownhill celebrating in front of them. What a class act!”
This supporter posted: “Love this. Both Brownhill and Tella taunting them and then VK apologising and moving them on.”
Meanwhile, one commented: “Vincent Kompany is a proper class act and a class man.
“Apologising to the Blackburn fans for a Burnley player antagonising them. Fair play to him! And what a job he’s done.”
Burnley are on course to break the 100-point barrier providing they win their final two games of the season.
A delighted Kompany told Sky Sports after the game: “I’m really happy. I’m so proud of the guys.
“For anyone who doesn’t know what happens in this part of the world, this is a massive game, so there couldn’t be a better, bigger game for us to win the league.
“It will be talked about for generations. I thought it was a template for us for things to come.
“This season, everybody’s made so much of the football we’ve played, but today we’ve shown how we can grind it out. We defended so well.”
