A family were robbed and attacked on their farm outside Burgersfort in Polokwane on Friday afternoon. Police are asking for anyone with information to come forward. Just like most other crimes, South Africans are no strangers to farm attacks. Thankfully, the victims of this attack were able to escape with their lives.

Limpopo Police say the farm owner was attacked by five men as he arrived back on the farm. He was forced into the main house and tied up by his attackers. The man (68), his wife (58) and his 80-year-old mother-in-law were all tied up.

Police say the robbers then demanded keys to the safe. As those arguments played out, all three family members were assaulted.

“The suspects took the couple’s wedding rings. They also stole items such as laptop, cellphone, binoculars, credit cards, passports and undisclosed amount of cash in foreign currency. The suspects then fled the farm using the couple’s Ford Ranger bakkie. The victims managed to alert one of the employees who immediately notified the Police.”

Vehicle recovered after suspects cornered

A joint police operation was quickly launched after the attack. Between local police, neighbouring police stations and private security, the stolen vehicle was spotted.

The vehicle was cornered just outside Burgersfort. With the writing on the wall for the robbers, they made a run for it on foot. As a result, the vehicle was fully recovered. But none of the stolen goods.

Limpopo Police Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has praised the public-private partnership that led to the vehicle being tracked down.

The suspects still remain at large.
