A lot has changed since “Farmville” exploded on Facebook. For a good two years, it was one of the most popular games on the planet. Although it hasn’t reached the heights of its past popularity, the franchise still has a devoted following.
The third entry to the series “Farmville 3” launches today in a different environment from the original. Facebook on PC has been supplanted by gaming on smartphones, and that’s where players will find the latest chapter. It’s available on iOS and Android devices as well as the Mac M1.
The game features the gameplay that fans are familiar with. They’ll plant crops, grow and harvest them with help from friends. One of the newer wrinkles is the emphasis on farmhands, which have skills that help players build a successful farm. “Farmville 3” features 30 of them, and they have a diverse set of skills such as baking, fishing, lumberjacking and crafting.
The bigger addition is the focus on animal husbandry. Players will adopt, nurture and raise babies of more than 150 breeds of creatures. They give players items such as wool and butter, which they’ll use or sell. The animals aren’t limited to the critters that one would find on traditional farms. Tigers and alpacas can also find their way to players’ setups.
Other new features include the ability o control weather patterns to speed crop growth, catch more fish or earn more coins. Players can also band together to form “co-ops” to exchange good and cooperate to win events and unique decorations.
Is “Farmville 3” still relevant in age with so many games at players’ fingertips? That will depend on how well Zynga has updated one of its original franchises. Players will find out if the game still has the same magic today.
