FC Platinum continued their dominance on the domestic football scene after being crowned the Chibuku Super Cup champions after a penalty shootout victory over Ngezi Platinum Stars at Mandava Stadium on Sunday.
Veteran goalkeeper Petros Mhari emerged as the hero after saving Marvellous Mukumba’s kick before Gift Mbweti converted the winning spot-kick to secure a hard-fought 5-3 penalty shootout win.
The game was evenly balanced during regulation time with both sides failing to create any meaningful chances.
There was no winner after the 90 minutes as the match ended goalless in regulation time before the 30 minutes extra time also failed to produce a winner.
In the resultant nail-biting penalty shootout, Ngezi missed two kicks, while the Platinum Boys converted all their efforts to secure their second Chibuku Super Cup title after winning their maiden trophy in 2014.
FC Platinum will pocket US$75 000 in prize money, to be paid in local currency at the prevailing official rate on the day and also get the ticket to represent the country in the next edition of the CAF Confederation Cup while Ngezi Platinum pocket US$50 000 for their trouble.
