Ferrari has led the 21st Century reinvention of carrozzeria, first producing one-offs in 2004, and later launching the Icona series of strictly limited production vehicles. Ferrari has diligently developed this capability over the past two decades. Other companies have produced limited-series cars, but no other company has matched Ferrari’s capabilities with one-offs, no one else has cracked the code quite so well. That advantage results from a combination of (first and foremost) a well-established and vibrant client base. Ferrari’s advanced capabilities in computer-aided design don’t hurt, but it’s also the inimitable capabilities of Italians to produce one-off elements.
The track-only XX program, which brought cars like the 2005 FXX, 2009 599 FXX and 2014 FXX-K, helped develop the capabilities, free from road-legal restrictions. These cars pioneered powertrain, calibration, and aerodynamic advances.
The limited-series 2014 F60 America for the U.S. market was precursor to the Icona limited-series cars. Only ten were built. The F60 America in many regards set the pattern for subsequent one-off and limited series Ferraris. The Ferrari J50, a 10-off series created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ferrari selling cars in Japan, is another example.
Today Ferrari unveiled the SP51, a one-off roadster commissioned by a Taiwan-based Ferrari collector. Like the Icona limited-series SP1 and SP2 before it, SP51 is a pure roadster based on the architecture and powertrain fundamentals of the V12-powered 812.
The SP51 features a one-off shade of red, a blue-and-white livery inspired by a 1955 Ferrari 410 S race car, unique headlights and wheels, and of course the fundamental architecture and powertrain of the 812 GTS and Superfast.
Ferrari employed computational fluid dynamics programs (CFD) to fine-tune the aerodynamics of this one-off roadster.
Creation of Ferrari one-off vehicles is initiated by the client. Development is guided by Ferrari’s design boss, Flavio Manzoni, who can tap engineering and fabrication resources throughout the company.
