Happy Thursday!

I have a ton of fresh Southern California music festival news to share with you, as well as some key events that happened last weekend that we’ll revisit in this edition of Festival Pass.

But first, BeachLife Ranch, the country and Americana sister fest of the annual BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach, announced the lineup for its second annual event and it’s big.

The three-day concert, scheduled for Sept. 22-24 at Seaside Lagoon, will feature performances by Jack Johnson, Brad Paisley, The Doobie Brothers, Cody Jinks, Wynonna Judd, Midland, Shooter Jennings and many more. Find out who else is playing and how to get passes here.

I wasn’t kidding when I said there was a lot of festival news to share this week. Aside from BeachLife Ranch, three other area festivals were announced since the last newsletter hit your inbox.

???? Is For Lovers Festival will make its California debut

Rock band Hawthorne Heights announced it will bring its single-day Is For Lovers Festival to Oak Canyon Park in Silverado on Aug. 26. Though we don’t know the lineup, other stops on the festival tour have included acts like Jimmy Eat World, Bayside, Alkaline Trio and Yellowcard. Find out more about the festival and how to get passes early here.

☁️ Head in the Clouds Festival is back

88 Rising and Goldenvoice also revealed the lineup for the Head in the Clouds Festival, happening Aug. 5-6 at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Jackson Wang, Niki, Rich Brian, Rina Sawayama and more are set to perform. Find out who else is playing and how to get passes here.

☠️ Punk in the Park expands its flagship event in Orange County

We also know some of the acts that will be playing the 3rd annual Punk in the Park, which will take place Nov. 4-5 at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado. Brew Ha Ha Productions announced that the 2023 lineup would include Pennywise, Descendents, Circle Jerks, Goldfinger and others.

I caught up with Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge to talk about Punk in the Park when the festival hit Ventura for a single-day show back in March. Read what he had to say here, and find out who else is performing and how to get tickets to the Silverado fest.

???? It’s a Cruel, Cruel World

The Cruel World Festival in Pasadena last weekend was insane. It started off just like any other festival — lots of good music, some food, drinks and awesome, cooler weather.

However, things took a turn as punk icon Iggy Pop hit the main stage. Lightning could be seen in the distance and Iggy & Co. were cut short and the festival was shut down by the Pasadena Fire Department due to a severe weather alert. Fans were devastated by this news, especially those that had waited 15 years to see Cruel World headliner, Siouxsie.

But the weather gods proved to be no match for the rock gods as festival promoters Goldenvoice swiftly tried to ease the pain and tears cased by the sudden evacuation by announcing that anyone with a wristband could return to the venue the following day (Sunday, May 21) to see Gary Numan, Iggy Pop and Siouxsie, who would now perform a special extended set. It was truly an unprecedented response to some extreme circumstances, but reporter Peter Larsen was back at the venue on Sunday and you can read his full recap of events here.

???? Foo Fighters announced a new drummer

During a livestream event on Sunday, May 21, Los Angeles rock band the Foo Fighters revealed that Josh Freese of Southern California punk band The Vandals will step in on the drum kit following the death of Taylor Hawkins last year. If you’ve been to a rock or punk show in the past two decades there’s a good chance you’ve already seen Freese perform with one of your favorite bands. Here’s a look at who he is and who else he’s played with.

???? FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine kicks off its 2023 season

The 12,000-capacity outdoor venue launches its 2023 season with rock band Matchbox Twenty on Sunday, May 28. Find out who else is coming to the venue this season here.

???? R.I.P. Tina Turner

We lost a music icon on Wednesday, May 24. Tina Turner was not only a terrific singer and performer, she was a survivor, an icon and a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Read more about Tina Turner here.
