Almost exactly a month ago, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles and Queens Royals met in Charlotte N.C., and the Royals outlasted the Eagles for an 84-82 win.
AJ McKee had 23 points for Queens to lead the way and a 52 points second half was enough to get the win.
Now, they will meet again in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament as the No. 9 and No. 10 seeds in the 10-team conference tournament. FGCU is a long way removed from its magical tournament run of years past, but maybe it could start another memorable postseason run today and shock the conference.
The winner of this matchup will face No. 1 seeded Kennesaw State. Let’s take a look at the odds.
FGCU vs. Queens odds, spread and total
FGCU vs. Queens prediction and pick
Florida Gulf Coast has lost three of its last four games, but still managed to sneak into the conference tourney. Meanwhile, Queens has lost five of its most recent six games, with its only win coming over No. 1 seeded Kennesaw State.
The Royals two most recent losses were against Liberty who is the prohibitive favorite in this tournament. Neither team has much momentum heading into this week.
Queens has a chance to be scary in this tournament because of how much it can fill it up on the offensive end. The team is 32nd in points per game and 56th in efficiency, while playing with the 46th fastest tempo of any team according to KenPom’s adjusted tempo.
However, it also allows 75.5 points a game which is 326th in the country and are 311th in defensive efficiency.
FGCU is 119th in offensive efficiency and 226th on defense, so it isn’t one to get a ton of stops either. In a close game, usually you have to get a stop, but this one might just be who can make the most of their possessions late in the game, and that’s Queens with Kenny Dye and AJ McKee in the backcourt.
Pick: Queens -1.5 (-114)
