Gov. Ron DeSantis lost another Florida Republican.
Rep. Greg Steube endorsed Donald Trump for president in 2024, the fifth Republican member of Congress from Florida throwing their support behind the former president rather than DeSantis.
“He’s the only person that can reverse, on day one, all these disastrous policies of the Biden administration and the type of things that have happened under the Biden administration would have never happened under President Trump,” Steube said in an interview Monday on Newsmax.
“We need to right all the wrongs that have happened under this administration, fix the things that happened in Afghanistan, support our military and our veterans, and do the things that the America First agenda stands for, and that is one person: Donald Trump,” he said, adding that Trump, 76, enjoys wide support in his district in southwest Florida.
Citing Trump’s America First campaign position, Steube said it wasn’t a “difficult decision” for him to make.
“President Trump has always been there both personally and professionally. I think the America First agenda is what people in Florida are looking for,” he said.
DeSantis, who is expected to be the chief political foe to Trump’s Republican primary run, was reelected to the Florida governor’s office last November.
“I hear from constituents all the time that want him to finish out his term and support President Trump, and I’m honored to be part of President Trump’s team,” Steube said.
He joins other Republicans in Florida’s congressional delegation to back the former president — including Reps. Matt Gaetz, Cory Mills, Byron Donalds, and Anna Paulina Luna.
The defections of Sunshine State Republicans reportedly has Team DeSantis working to shore up support.
The governor’s political team has been reaching out to the state’s congressional contingent, NBC News reported.
Steube reportedly was among the lawmakers contacted.
Trump, since he was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, has extended his lead against DeSantis among Republican primary voters, surging to as much as a 30 point advantage in some polls.
The former president was indicted on falsifying business record charges stemming from a $130,000 hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
