Joshua Culibao picked up a truly satisfying win at UFC 284.
The Australian fighter locked up a rear-naked choke in the second round to secure a massive victory in front of an ecstatic Perth crowd on Sunday morning.
However, he had to overcome a disastrous first round to get it done.
Melsi Baghdasaryan was in control opponent before he threw a spinning kick that landed below the belt and sent Culibao crashing to the canvas in agony.
UFC fighters are given five minutes to recover from inadvertent low blows but Culibao took a fraction of his allotted him and went back to fighting, with a grimace on his face, for the rest of the first frame.
When he got to his corner, the 28-year-old stood on his stool, tried to shake out his private parts and could be heard telling his corner that he was having issues getting his breath.
It seemed to be just a matter of time before Baghdasaryan took out his clearly compromised opponent but that didn’t happen and Culibao amazingly turned things around in round two.
Culibao capitalised when his opponent fell over after landing a kick as he jumped on his back and locked up a choke that was so tight Baghdasaryan had to tap out.
The win was not only satisfying because he had to battle through adversity to get it, but he also had beef with his opponent after they clashed while weighing in for their UFC 284 fight.
Baghdasaryan put his hand around Culibao’s throat when they were squaring off in front of a raucous Aussie crowd that was delighted to see their man settle the rivalry in emphatic fashion.
Culibao discussed the ‘nut shot’ and his impressive finish during his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping.
He said: “It was pretty bad. It was one of those ones where you have just got to kind of figure out if they are still there. Do you know what I mean?
“This is a dream come true. Perth, thank you for having me and the UFC for coming down here. I love you guys! That’s 50K bonus worthy, give me my money!”
