When Fikayo Tomori left Chelsea for AC Milan last season, many fans were critical of his decision to do so with the young centre-back being out of the picture under previous manager Frank Lampard. Tomori had impressed whilst playing under Lampard at Derby County, before being elevated to the Chelsea first-team when Lampard was brought in.

However, Tomori would fail to ever truly establish himself and would be behind the likes of Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma.

He became unhappy with the lack of playing time, with the centre-back also being unhappy that he was told to work harder in training by Lampard, he would eventually seek a move away.

He would join AC Milan on loan in January 2021, impressing in his loan spell with the Italian giants, before making that move permanent last summer – signing for £25 million on a four-year deal.

Tomori knew that he was taking a risk, in the past, English players who have gone on to play abroad have found themselves out of the international picture.

However, Tomori has gone on to make drastic improvements to his game – and has become an important player for Stefano Pioli’s side as they won Serie A with their 3-0 win over Sassuolo on Sunday – their first league title in 11 years.

Tomori has been linked with a move back to the Premier League, with Arsenal, Manchester United and even a return to Chelsea being mentioned on a few occasions. But since his exit from Stamford Bridge, the 24-year-old has gone from a centre-back looking for game time to an important cog in a Serie A winning side.
