Fiona Phillips heartbreakingly worried that her health issues would lead to the end of her broadcasting career, just one year before revealing her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
The GMTV star, 62, spoke out on suffering from brain fog and anxiety in an interview with the Daily Record back in January 2022.
Fiona initially believed her symptoms were due to the menopause, but doctors went on to inform her that her struggles were a result of Alzheimer’s disease.
The ITV presenter had been keeping her Alzheimer’s diagnosis behind closed doors, but decided to go public with the news this week to raise awareness.
Back in 2022, Fiona admitted she had found herself unable to work because of her symptoms.
“They call it brain fog, I don’t know what I’m talking about half the time,” she told the publication at the time.
She went on to explain: “God, it’s horrible, I haven’t worked for the first time in my life, I can’t do television work because I’m so anxious and just scared of everything and I’m not that kind of person at all.
“I have the intent to do everything I used to do, but then your body, your brain, doesn’t let you.
“The fear takes over. I hope to God this isn’t the end of my career.”
She also told The Mirror at the time: “I’ve cried a thousand rivers in the past few weeks and I’ve got nothing to be sad about. I’ve been fearing for my sanity and am scared to do things I’ve been doing with ease for years.”
Fiona had been seeking support from menopause specialist Dr Louise Newson, who has appeared on This Morning.
The star’s husband, This Morning editor Martin Frizell, had suggested she contact the medical expert.
However, in a new interview with the publication alongside her other half, Fiona shared that she now knows Alzheimer’s was the true reason behind her symptoms.
Martin shared: “We thought maybe it was the menopause because all the symptoms were there; brain fog, anxiety and confusion.
“We got in touch with a menopause specialist who took her under their wing and put her on HRT but while that improved some symptoms, the brain fog remained.”
Tragically, both of Fiona’s parents also suffered from Alzheimer’s, with her mother Amy developing the illness at just 54-years-old.
