After riding the wave of hit singles “Peru” (and the mega-remix with Ed Sheeran) “Playboy”, and “Bandana” with Asake, Nigerian Afrobeats star Fireboy DML has dropped his third studio album, Playboy.
The 26-year-old talent burst onto the scene with his now-iconic 2019 album, Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, which featured tracks such as “Jealous” and “Scatter”, before dropping APOLLO the following year, which saw his profile further amplified. Showing growth in abundance, Fireboy’s new album is arguably his best one yet.
Standouts include “Compromise” featuring ‘Afro-rave’ king Rema—which fans have been eager to hear since the tracklist landed—as well as the international link-up on “Diana” with Chris Brown and Shenseea. Of course, the Ed Sheeran-assisted mega-remix of “Peru” also features.
In a recent interview with OkayAfrica, Fireboy said: “Last year, I was practically lost creatively. I kept on making music sporadically, and in July, I took my first trip to the United States. I took a walk in New York City with a cigarette stick in my hand, didn’t smoke it, just kept walking for about fifteen minutes; nobody recognised or looked at me twice, or gave a fuck about me, and that walk of freedom opened my mind I just felt so free.”
He added: “I took that energy with me to Miami, went to a strip club, had the time of my life and then to San Francisco where I made ‘Peru’. Recording [that song] opened my eyes and gave me a sense of direction and I knew it was time for a new album.”
