Nick Nurse may have been fired by the Toronto Raptors on Friday, but he may not have to wait very long to find another job.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Nurse is a “prominent candidate” for the Houston Rockets in their coaching search.

The Rockets parted ways with Stephen Silas after the end of the regular season, declining to pick up the fourth year of his contract and letting him go.

Nurse would give the Rockets a level of coaching prowess that they haven’t had since Mike D’Antoni departed following the 2019-20 season. He won an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year the following season.

Houston would be a new challenge for Nurse, as he would be taking over a team squarely in the middle of an effort to rebuild. The Rockets have lost at least 55 games over each of the last three seasons, and have consistently been among the worst teams in the NBA during that time.

Nurse was able to get the best out of talented players who weren’t quite superstars in Toronto, and he would be looking to do the same in Houston. Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith are all players who could benefit from Nurse’s expertise.
