Firefighters Battle Fire in North Hollywood Building After Roof Collapse

Firefighters working to put out flames that engulfed a North Hollywood commercial building had to shift to a defensive battle this evening after the roof collapsed at the front of the structure but extinguished the blaze in less than two hours.

The fire was reported at 5:09 p.m. at 6881 N. Troost Ave., said the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Margaret Stewart.

At about 5:25 p.m., the roof collapsed at the front of the building and all firefighters were ordered out, Stewart said. All got out safely.

The incident shifted to “defensive mode,” she said, with firefighters working with hoses outside the building to douse the flames and protect surrounding structures.

More than 80 firefighters put out the flames at 6:55 p.m., Stewart said. They successfully protected adjacent buildings separated by just a few feet.

Firefighters planned to spend the night putting out any remaining hot spots and watching for flare-ups, she said.

No injuries were reported. An arson investigation was underway per protocol for a greater-alarm fire.
