Audiences have proven to love historical adaptations that are vibrant in setting and wardrobe, and especially creative in writing and casting. Among the many that continue to hit both the small and big screens, yet another is soon to hit the docket at AMC. Per a report from Collider, the network’s newest project is a riveting new period series called Mary and George, and new photos from the show have just dropped to give a firsthand look at what to expect from this devious and dramatic retelling of true events.
Mary and George is set to be a British historical drama for AMC based on the original book The King’s Assassin by Benjamin Woodley. The project is created by D.C. Moore, who also worked on the acclaimed series Killing Eve. Sitting in the director’s chair is Oliver Hermanus, who is also executive producing alongside Moore, Sam Hoyle, and Liza Marshall. Starring in the series are Oscar winner Julianne Moore (Sharper), Nicholas Galitzine (Chambers), Tony Curran (Outlaw King), and Nicola Walker (Marriage) among others.
The premise of the series, based on true events, is set a few centuries back in the year 1570. Mary Villiers (Moore) is a clever woman who has her sights set on the royal inner circles of England and Scotland. She puts her handsome son George (Galitzine) to the task of seducing both King James VI of Scotland and James I of England (Curran), the son of Mary Queen of Scots, to curry favor and ultimately gain power that no one else can. Thanks to some perfect political maneuvering, George succeeds in becoming the King’s lover and advisor, his mother Mary by proxy. Single-handedly, the Villiers go from being mere commoners to two of the most influential people in England, having the King’s ear at all times. Mary is granted the title Countess of Buckingham, while her son becomes the first Duke of Buckingham. Scandal and romance dominate the forefront throughout the series while the threat of an invasion from the Spanish looms overhead.
