Throw another contender in the small-EV ring, with Fisker’s upcoming PEAR (Personal Electric Automotive Revolution) vehicle being spotted in-person for the first time, during testing in Los Angeles early December. And with an alleged starting price in the low CDN$40,000s, the brand has aspirational goals with this one, from the sounds of it.

The Pear “is the vehicle that ultimately will take us to a million vehicles – we hope – per year, in 2027,” company head Henrik Fisker told Autocar recently. The car will be assembled by Foxconn in Ohio, at a plant previously owned by General Motors. Timing-wise, Fisker is looking at 250,000 units per year when production starts in the back half of 2024, with initial deliveries shortly thereafter.

Using a dedicated steel platform that’s less expensive than the aluminium skateboard architecture of Fisker’s luxury Ocean, the Pear’s chassis will also underpin two additional EVs. Why? Maximizing every manufacturing dollar to give the public a premium EV for a low price. How low? U.S. prices have been confirmed to start from $29,900.

The Pear is juicy, with features such as a trunk lid that slides behind the rear bumper for improved access in tight spots; and two battery options, one for city driving and the other for longer distances. For now, the brand claims a range exceeding 310 miles, or, for the rest of the world using the metric system, 499 km.

The initiative to keep costs down will be led by Alpay Uguz, previously general manager of BMW’s SUV production line in South Carolina. Unsurprisingly, details on how he plans to go about that have not been shared.

So what category does the Pear fall in? Fisker says it’s a “kind of a funky vehicle” and difficult to segment. “I guess you’d call it a crossover, but it doesn’t really look like an SUV. It looks like a futuristic little space shuttle — to describe it best.” Confused? Yeah, same. I’m calling it a “subcompact crossover.” You read it here first.
