Earlier this year several UK councils announced that they would be increasing parking charges by 10 percent or more. Local authorities in York, Southend, Thanet, Rutland, and London Borough of Waltham forest warned that the change would come in April this year.
Some motoring organisations have hit out at the plans saying that the extra charges will deter people from visiting certain high streets.
Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, said: “Residents could soon ‘vote with their wheels’ and decide it’s easier, maybe even cheaper, to avoid the town centre altogether and shop online.
“Maybe worse for those councils with rising charges, they may choose to drive to the neighbouring town or city and spend their hard-earned money there.”
However, councils have defended their decision, saying that they desperately need money to fund services such as social care.

With the increase in charges set to go ahead, experts at Peter Vardy have shared their top tips on how to get the cheapest car parking deals.
Use a comparison site
The experts stressed that by using comparison sites for parking drivers will be able to save as much as £45.
All motorists must do is type in the postcode of their shopping destination and choose from several potential parking spots.
The £45 figure is based on the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive parking space around one area, if drivers were to rent it for eight hours.
However, they are likely to have all the services that drivers will ever need. For anyone struggling with costs, this could be a stress-free way to save money on parking.
EV drivers can use free charging stations
Electric car owners could benefit from over 5,000 free charging stations across the UK.
If they are running low on battery and need to charge up whilst parked, free charging stations will not only provide free electricity but also a free parking spot.
