GOING on holiday is getting more expensive – and with people tightening their belts in the UK, a trip abroad may seem out of reach.
However, experts have revealed five ways you could save as much as £500 on your holiday, even if travelling during the peak summer season.
According to Google Trends data, searches for ‘cheap summer flights’ has seen a 524.74 per cent increase within the last month alone.
In response, budget airline Wizz Air has revealed their best tips for travelling affordably during peak season.
1. Book direct
While comparison sites can be handy – presenting to you all the flights that fall into your criteria – booking flights through a third party can cost up to £20 more.
According to Wizz Air, booking directly with the airline means you can avoid the extra commission added on top and take advantage of a lower price.
2. Go off-peak
Flying during the peak season will always cost you much more than a quieter time outside of the school holidays.
However, an easy way to cut costs during this time – sometimes by as much as £100 – is to travel on off-peak days and times.
This can mean flying mid-week rather than on Friday and at night rather than during the day.
3. Switch airports
It might make sense to book a return flight to the airport you took off from, but flexibility can amount to big savings.
Landing back at an airport in your home city – but not the same one you flew from – can shave off up to £100.
We recently revealed how you could save money by simply choosing a different airport nearby.
4. Use social media
Just like other brands, airlines often share deals or promotional discount codes with their social media followers or newsletter subscribers.
So it can be worth your while to stay connected with your favourite carrier – not least because offers tend to be upwards of 10 per cent, making a general saving of £80 for a party of four.
5. Fly solo
Searching for flights as a group booking can automatically make the tickets more expensive, as airlines automatically try to seat everyone together.
While it might be more time-consuming, booking spots separately could save you up to £200 on a round trip for a party of four willing to sit apart.
A frequent flyer has revealed how he and his wife always sit together on a plane – even when they book seats apart.
