Flight attendant shares hotel room tip to stay safe on holiday

Former flight attendant Nassim exclusively talked to Express.co.uk about the best ways to stay safe in a hotel room.

The crew member shared her number one tip and said that she always keeps her suitcase or handbag by the door, a clever hack that will alert hotel guests if someone is trying to enter their room.

Nassim explained: “I would always place my bag by the door. In case someone would open it from the outside so that it would make a noise.”

Holidaymakers can keep their suitcase or handbag by the door but this trick works using almost any object in the room.

There are also ways to tell if someone has entered the room while you were away and experts at Lifehacker recommended using “a piece of hair.”

They explained: “Attach a thin, barely visible hair or piece of thread in front of your door, such that it crosses the crack between the door and wall. The thread will tear or fall down if anyone has opened the door in your absence.”

Another option is using a piece of paper: “From inside your room, fold a small slip of paper and wedge it into the doorframe. Check the outside so that you can see a small piece poking out from the other side of the door—take a picture of exactly what it looks like.

“When someone opens the door, the piece of paper will fall out of the hinge and onto the floor. “

Flight attendant Nassim shared other tips to stay safe when holidaying abroad, and said: “I would also make sure to never get in a lift with just one person and press my floor.

“And make sure no one is following you to your room. If you are feeling unsafe wait in the lobby until they have gone. Only then, proceed to go to your room especially if you are on your own.”

Nassim continued: “I would always also put ‘no room service’ on my door to avoid having anyone come in.”

She added: “When I started flying I heard of a story where a crew member had gone into their hotel room and not checked it out properly and someone had hidden in the room.

“They got attacked so every time I got to a hotel room I would use my luggage case to keep the hotel door open.

“I then go inside and check everywhere. I would check the bathroom, under the bed, inside the wardrobes, under the table and behind the curtains to make sure that no one was in there. I would never ever enter a room without doing that,” she explained.

Nassim also recommended always using the safe to keep valuables and money, and “leaving the TV on as well so it seems like I am in the room at all times”.
