It has been a while since Fodor’s, the travel guide outfit, issued its famous GO and NO GO lists, detailing places to visit or avoid in the coming year. The NO GOs are still on hiatus, of course. Most of the planet is still a no-go zone due to the pandemic. But the GO list is back in domestic travel form.
The 49 GO destinations are an eclectic bunch that ranges from St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands to arty Marfa, Texas, and the tiny, bookstore-lined village of Hobart in New York’s Catskills. There are cities, districts, national parks and festivals — Burning Man and the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest, among them.
Eleven of those destinations are on the West Coast, including the lively city of Bend in Oregon, Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho and three spots in California: Long Beach, Mono Lake and New Cuyama.
Fodor’s writer Danielle Bauter singles out Long Beach as Los Angeles’ “weirdly wonderful,” lesser-known sister, a city known for its restaurants, arts and music, as well as for the majestic (and haunted) Queen Mary. Mono Lake’s towering tufas and surreal sights on the east side of the Sierra Nevada put that tourist attraction on the list. And the remote high desert town of New Cuyama in Santa Barbara County is having a moment, thanks to the opening of a boutique hotel, the 21-room Cuyama Buckhorn, last year.
