Food lover shares ‘easiest’ overnight oats recipe that uses just 4 ingredients

Oats don’t just have to be eaten as hot porridge, in fact, they make a flavoursome breakfast when chilled in the fridge overnight. And whipping up this healthy meal couldn’t be easier when using this quick recipe.

Sharing the recipe on the vegetarian food blog, HurryTheFoodUp, Hauke Fox claimed that his recipe makes “the easiest overnight oats ever”.

And they can be flavoured with almost anything – from fruits, nuts, and seeds, to chocolate.

Hauke explained: “All the prep and assembly is completed the night before so they’re the best easy breakfast ever – all you have to do is remember to take the overnight oats out of the fridge the next morning.

“They’re portable and can be eaten on the commute, in the office, or at home. You’ll never skip breakfast again!”

Ingredients

  • Rolled oats
  • Milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • Honey – (or maple syrup, agave, brown sugar)
  • Toppings – (cinnamon, peanut butter, Greek yoghurt, chocolate chips, fruit, seeds, nuts)

While any oats can be used for this recipe, Hauke noted that rolled varieties “work best” since they soften more quickly than thicker, steel-cut versions.

Cinnamon, cardamom, or vanilla extract can all be added for extra flavour to “perfectly complement” the taste of the oats.

All it takes is five minutes to prepare the oats, along with a few minutes to chop up any fresh fruit and nuts for the toppings.

Start by measuring out half a cup of oats and half a cup of milk per portion.

In a clean jar or container, combine the milk and oats. Any flavourings like vanilla, cocoa powder or cinnamon should be added at this point.

He added: “Overnight oats are a very healthy breakfast since they’re full of fibre, protein and antioxidants – they’re also quick, simple and cheap to meal prep.

“These oats are the perfect weight loss breakfast because their high beta-glucan fibre content leaves you feeling fuller for longer, and their 15g of protein per serving helps to build muscle.”

While leaving the oats overnight (for around eight hours), means they are best prepared the day before eating them, they should be fine after just four hours in the fridge and can be enjoyed the same day.

Yoghurt can also be used in place of the milk, though it is important to give the mixture a solid shake once the lid is securely on the container.
