Ford President and CEO Jim Farley introduces the Lincoln L100 concept car
Jim Farley first got into cars as a young man when he saw a prototype of the 275 GTB-powered Ferrari Dino in Luigi Chinett’s Ferrari distributor in Connecticut.
That lithe, V12 Italian beauty ignited an automotive career that has included stops with Lincoln and Lexus and, now, as president and CEO of Ford Motor Company.
Farley is a genuine car guy — he’s owned and raced everything from a 1964 Ford Shelby Cobra to a 1978 Lola T298 — at the top of one of the largest and most iconic carmakers on the planet.
Jim Farley discusses his passion for automobiles, past, present and future
To get to the top, “I haven’t taken the traditional route,” Farley told me when we spoke at Monterey Car Week, saying his career has “added up in a strange way to having the right experience, made the right kind of mistakes, to lead the company right now.’’
Right now is perhaps the most disruptive period in the American auto industry since Farley’s grandfather (Ford employee no. 389) worked on the Model T assembly line in 1914.
Watch my interview here with Farley in which he discussed his career, the history of Lincoln, which celebrates 100 years in the Ford family, the future of luxury, and navigating Ford during a time of great industry upheaval.
