Ford Maverick’s hybrid powertrain becomes an option for 2024

Ford Maverick’s hybrid powertrain becomes an option for 2024

Article content

When the Ford Maverick compact pickup debuted for 2022, the big news was that it not only came with a hybrid powertrain, but that was the base engine, and it cost less than the gas-only version. But that was then, and now for 2024, the hybrid becomes an extra-charge option.

According to a Ford of Canada representative, the issue is restrictions due to the hybrid battery supply chain. It’s made tougher by the fact that the Maverick isn’t the only vehicle that uses this particular one — it’s also found in hybrid versions of the Ford Escape, as well as the Kuga, its European counterpart.

That hybrid powertrain is unchanged from 2023, using a 2.5L four-cylinder engine with hybrid system. The gas-electric combination makes up to 191 horsepower, and is rated by Natural Resources Canada at 6.4 L/100 km in combined city-highway driving. It comes only in front-wheel drive (FWD) and uses an automatic continuously-variable transmission (CVT).

The gas-only engine is also unchanged from the current model. It’s a 2.0L four-cylinder with turbocharging — known as “EcoBoost” in Ford-speak — that makes 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, and comes only with all-wheel drive (AWD) and eight-speed automatic transmission. Its Natural Resources combined rating is 9.8 L/100 km.

2024 Ford Maverick Canadian pricing

Price hikes from the 2023 to 2024 model are between $1,000 and $2,500 for the two lower trims. The top-line Lariat jumps by $5,850 on the 2.0L and $6,850 on the hybrid, due to a considerable number of new standard features. These include a spray-in bedliner; wireless charger; several driver-assist safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centring, evasive steering assist and rear parking sensors; and a luxury package including navigation, premium stereo, heated steering wheel, hitch receiver, 400-watt inverter, and LED bed lighting.

In Canada for 2024, the base XL starts at $32,600 for the 2.0, and the hybrid at $33,100, before freight and taxes. The mid-level XLT starts at $35,700 for the 2.0, and $36,200 for the hybrid. The Lariat is $43,500 for the 2.0, and $44,000 for the hybrid.
