Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 mule spied, but it’s missing something

Wheel flares or a widebody kit — that’s what seems to be missing on this all-new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, a camouflaged test mule. Take a gander at the amount of rubber wrapped around the carbon fibre wheels; it’s poking out from the front fenders.

You might be wondering how we’re so sure it’s even a GT500 mule. Based on the large quad exhaust tips parked out back below the bumper, with inside tips positioned slightly above the outboard ones, much like the ones on the S550 GT500, we’re fairly certain that this is our collective first glimpse at the next super Mustang.

Undoubtedly, the most notable aspect of the captured test car is that it is a convertible. If you recall, the last S550 GT500 did without a drop-top version because the platform was maxed out with the roof in place. Chopping it off with the kind of power it had, namely 760 hp from its 5.2L supercharged V8 engine, would have all but twisted the structure to bits — okay, maybe we’re exaggerating a bit.

On the topic of power, little to nothing is known about the S650 GT500. Based once more on the exhaust system and the clearly wider track than the S650s we’ve seen thus far, the output will certainly reach far into the 700 horsepower figure once again — perhaps even crossing the 800 hp threshold. Let’s not forget that Dodge has just released a 1,025 hp Demon.

Some were disappointed that Ford did not introduce an electrified Mustang at the S650’s launch back in September 2022. Though this is entirely speculatory, maybe this will be it. The spy shots show only the driver’s side with the fuel door visible leaving us to imagine the possibility of a charge port door on the passenger side.

Who knows? We’re sure to find out more in the months before the new GT500 arrives, which unfortunately is still a little ways out. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will likely drop in 2025 as a 2026 model.
