HIGHLIGHTS

  • The three-match series between India is tied 1-1
  • Virat Kohli’s woes grew further
  • Wasim Jaffer tried to analyse Kohli’s issues

Former India captain Virat Kohli once again fell cheaply in India’s chase of 247 runs against England in the 2nd ODI at Lord’s. Kohli edged a David Willey delivery back to the keeper and walked back to the pavilion after scoring 16 runs – another one of his poor outings in international cricket. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer pointed out Kohli’s issues outside the off stump channel and said that the teams will keep bowling to Kohli in the fifth and sixth stump channel.

“Virat Kohli again looked good, but teams will keep bowling there (outside off stump) all the time. He needs to understand that, especially at those lengths where he can’t get run off. Anything short, he can dab it to the third man. Anything full is fine as well. But he needs to understand which deliveries he must leave,” Jaffer said on ESPNCricinfo.

Kohli once again looked good with his shots, but as it has happened over and over again in the last couple of years, Kohli got out at a time when nobody expected him to.

“Today (Thursday) was the day. There was no pressure of the run rate. The wicket was pretty good as he was batting in the second half. He started really well, but that’s been the case for almost the two years that he hasn’t scored a hundred. Teams are going to target those fifth and sixth stumps. He needs to find a way.”

Kohli has been criticised heavily for his form, especially after the rise of several contenders for the middle order position. Kohli has rested himself in three out of four series after the Indian Premier League. Kohli did not play the five-match series against South Africa and then did not play against Ireland either. Kohli has gone through a lean patch of form against England in Test, T20Is and the single ODI he has played. Kohli has also been rested from the white-ball series against West Indies, which drew criticism from several former Indian players.

With just a few months to go for the T20 World Cup in Australia, Virat Kohli has tough competition against several upcoming Indian stars.
