Former Liverpool star Luis Suarez is reportedly set to sign for Argentinian club River Plate to replace Manchester City bound striker Julian Alvarez.
Suarez is set to leave Atletico Madrid on 1st July when his contract with the La Liga side expires and according to Mundo Deportivo, River Plate are very keen to snap up the 35-year-old.
‘[Suarez] is an elite player, who is currently recovering from a knee injury,’ the club’s manager Marcelo Gallardo said on Sunday.
‘We made the attempt, he has the will, enthusiasm, it’s good. If he hadn’t shown enthusiasm, we wouldn’t be here waiting.
‘It will be a decision and when it is possible, we will see if it is feasible. You don’t have to lie to people or generate a lot of enthusiasm.’
However, other reports suggest that while an offer has been made Suarez is yet to come to a decision on his future and will take his time before choosing what to do next.
River Plate are in the market for a new striker with Alvarez set to link up with City next month.
The 22-year-old signed for Pep Guardiola’s side back in January before returning on loan to his boyhood club, and his form at River Plate will be hard to replicate having scored 53 goals in 119 games for the club since 2018.
The Argentinian international will be part of the Citizen’s new-look forward line, following the signing of Erling Haaland and the departure of Gabriel Jesus and potentially Raheem Sterling who continues to be linked to Chelsea
Suarez is regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation having had prolific and trophy-laden spells at Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Atletico, scoring a total of 452 goals in 730 games across his entire club career.
The Uruguay has also been linked with moves to Aston Villa, Atalanta and Inter Miami.
