Former Man Utd target Quincy Promes prosecuted after ‘importing £65m of cocaine’

Former Netherlands international Quincy Promes has been prosecuted by the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service (NPPS) for his alleged involvement in importing 1300kg of cocaine into Belgium. The Spartak Moscow footballer has been accused of being involved in the importation of two shipments of cocaine back to a port in Antwerp in 2020 after police tapped his phone and listened to his conversations.

The 31-year-old has been questioned by the Amsterdam criminal investigation department twice about his links with criminal activity. According to Dutch outlet Het Parool, the NPPS have now decided to prosecute him for alleged involvement in the import of two batches of cocaine.

It relates to two batches of the drug, each weighing around 650kg and 720kg, which were intercepted by police in January 2020. Promes’ alleged involvement in the drug trafficking operation became apparent when police tapped his phone.

In one of the conversations, Promes is accused of discussing stabbing his cousin in the knee at a family party. In that particular case, the PPS demanded a prison sentence of two years against the footballer for aggravated assault after attempted murder charges were unproven.

The court was due to rule on the stabbing allegations case in March. But it decided to reopen the case at his lawyers’ request as the new allegations against the Dutch player came to light.

A hearing will take place on Monday as the stabbing case continues, with a subsequent pro forma hearing for the cocaine prosecution. Promes is currently in Russia as he is still contracted to Spartak and it is not known whether he will attend.

His lawyer Robert Malewicz has declined to comment on the new allegations levelled against his client but promised to “provide a further explanation during Monday’s hearing”.

Promes, who has played for a number of prominent European clubs in his career including Ajax, Sevilla and FC Twente, was once linked with a move to Manchester United.

Back when Louis van Gaal was in charge of the Red Devils, United made an approach to sign Promes from Twente after Van Gaal handed him his first international call-up, only for the winger to join Spartak in a £9.5m move instead.

He claimed afterwards that he turned down the chance to join the Premier League outfit as he didn’t feel ready for the move at the age of 23.

“I can confirm that [United were interested]. But a concrete proposal did not exist,” Promes was quoted telling The Mirror in 2015.

“Frankly, I felt at that moment not ready to make the transfer to Manchester. Who could guarantee me that I would not be constantly overlooked at United?”
