Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury will be like AJ vs Usyk

Former NBA point guard Deron Williams and NFL star Frank Gore are set to try their hand in the ring on the undercard of Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury next month.

The Athletic first reported the news. Neither Williams or Gore have ever fought professionally before.

Williams competed in the NBA for twelve years and played for the Utah Jazz and New Jersey Nets during that time.

A three-time all-star, Williams finished off his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers playing 20 times for the side.

The 37-year-old also won two gold medals as part of the US Olympic basketball team at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London games.

Gore is currently a free agent who last played for the New York Jets in 2020.

He holds the NFL record for most games played by a running back at 241 and is third on the league’s all-time rushing yards list.

Although never stepping foot in the cage, Williams has previously shown his interest in MMA and is a big fan of the sport.

He is the co-owner of the Fortis MMA gym Texas and spent his early days in wrestling gyms.

“I’ve been watching [MMA] for a while, just growing up being a wrestler,” he told The MMA Hour in 2017.

“As the years have gone on, I ended up meeting different UFC fighters and befriending a couple and really got into it because of that. I just have a love for the sport; I train as well, so I think that brings me even closer.”

And Williams also revealed his plans to compete in jiu-jitsu, something he is yet to do despite retiring from basketball.

“I’m gonna do some [jiu-jitsu] tournaments for sure. I’ll probably have to [wait until retirement],” he said.

“It would probably be the smartest thing to do. I do mostly no-gi; I’ve done some gi, [but] it’s just a little too slow-paced for me right now.”

Paul and Fury had their first press conference on Saturday for their grudge fight next month, but Fury missed the presser and flew back to the UK citing a ” family emergency “.

His opponent Paul did back up the reason, stating that it was an issue with his mother Chantal.

Fury will be trained by his half-brother, WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, and his trainer SugarHill Steward for the fight.

Tommy’s father John has trained him for all seven of his professional fights so far, but the 22-year-old will move his camp to Las Vegas for his upcoming fight.

Tyson defended his WBC title for the first time last month by knocking out rival Deontay Wilder in an epic trilogy fight.
