Former Dallas Mavericks guard Tyrell Terry retired from basketball due to his mental health.
Terry, a top draft pick out of Stanford, was having chronic anxiety, panic attacks and more due to the game of basketball. He chose to retire from the sport at a very young age.
The former top NBA Draft pick, who’s since gone back to school at Stanford, recently opened up to the New York Times about some of his struggles.
Among them: his relationship with his dad.
Tyrell Terry’s dad was pretty hard on him growing up. Unfortunately, they haven’t spoken in years.
From the New York Times:
Minor squabbles became major disputes, and at some point when Tyrell was in high school, he and his father stopped talking, and they haven’t spoken since.
Once, Tyrell offered his father a ticket to a Stanford game after Tyron’s wife, Heidi, had reached out. But they did not speak to each other there, and Tyron wasn’t at his son’s draft night party.
Nor did he call when Tyrell took leave in Dallas, signed with Memphis or left for Germany.
Terry is now at peace with his basketball decision, hopefully doing better with his mental health, too.
We wish both him and his dad all the best moving forward.
