Temperatures are plummeting this morning across the UK leading to frozen cars on driveways around the nation. Traditionally car owners will turn on the engine and blast the heating, leading to fumes pouring out of the exhaust pipe. But there are more eco-friendly options.
Using a bag of rice
Microwave some uncooked rice in a clear zip-lock bag for 30 seconds, then sit in the car and slowly pass the warm bag across the inside of your windscreen and other windows.
This will heat the glass up, melting ice and also preventing them from frosting up again while you drive.
One useful aspect of this method is that you can reuse the same rice and bag every time you need to defrost your car.

Prevention is also often better than the cure, however, so it’s wise to take steps to prevent ice from forming in the first place.
A purpose-made windscreen cover is a reasonably cheap remedy to put on the car the night before.
And if a cover isn’t available, old newspaper can be used instead.
If the driveway is very close to a house, parking the car facing the house will use the residual warmth to limit frost.
