Chelsea were made to pay for their poor finishing in front of goal as Casemiro and Anthony Martial put United two up before half time. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford found the net in second half, while Joao Felix scored a late consolation for the visitors at Old Trafford.
Chukwuemeka, who was withdrawn from England’s squad by Chelsea for the Under-20 World Cup, was handed his first start since Lampard took over as caretaker manager.
And Lampard says he was impressed by the impact the 19-year-old made in Chelsea’s midfield.
‘I don’t want to go into individuals because people can dissect that,’ Lampard said after Chelsea’s defeat to United.
‘I thought Carney did really well today coming into midfield, I thought he came in with personality.
‘It’s been one of the harder parts of my job with the numbers in the squad, the balance. Going with a team you feel to win important games, every game is important, and having time to work with the younger players who you haven’t seen before because normally you have a process, you have a pre-season, and time and you can really talk and train, and we haven’t had that time.
‘Unfortunately Carney hasn’t had an opportunity until today, for me but I thought he did well.
‘I thought Noni did pretty well again and the flip of that I thought Azpi was fantastic in terms of his captaincy and his attitude which is, as I keep talking about, for me it’s sometimes 70 per cent of the game is how you apply yourself and your attitude.’
